Summary

Freediving, also known as breath-hold diving, puts the body under stress due to low oxygen and high carbon dioxide levels, pressure changes, and exposure to cold. The reduced oxygen levels can lead to loss of consciousness (blackout) while underwater.

My research focused on understanding the processes involved in this event during repeated dives. I investigated how the body defends itself against low oxygen levels and the impact of rapid and deep breathing (hyperventilation) on this defense mechanism. The studies revealed that spleen contraction and a decreased heart rate are helpful, but engaging in repeated dives with hyperventilation can elevate the risk of blackout.

To address this, a sensor was developed and incorporated into a chest belt to detect hyperventilation, and a new apnea test was created to identify individuals with a higher risk of blackout. In summary, engaging in repeated dives with hyperventilation creates an "oxygen debt," which increases the risk of blackout despite the body's protective mechanisms.
